Building your own swimming pool is usually not as difficult or complicated as you might think. The skills you will need vary, according to the type of pool kit you purchase. Liner Pools essentially consist of a smooth surrounding wall and a cement floor which is screeded straight on to the earth, and a vinyl liner is placed inside the shell. The Pool shell simply forms the SHAPE of the pool. The Vinyl liner ensures that the pool is water-tight. It is often a disadvantage if the pool shell is watertight, since any water getting behind the liner cannot leak away into the ground and is difficult to remove. This may cause the liner to 'float' on the trapped water, causing movement and unsightly creases and wrinkles.

If your skills are general DIY jobs, a 'Panel Pool' is probably the easiest option. You will need to have the hole dug, but the pool assembly is simple and straight forward using large rigid panels bolted together. You may need to enlist the help of a local handyman for a day, to help screed the pool floor, but the rest of the work is simple and straightforward.

If you are confident doing brick and block work then a 'Block & Liner' pool - where the pool walls are constructed of concrete blocks - may suit you. If you have reasonable plastering skills you will probably be able to render the walls and screed the pool floor, otherwise, outside help may be needed for this stage.

In fact, no manual skill at all is needed if you prefer to simply 'manage' the project and hire contractors to carry out the individual jobs.
